PERSISTENT ‘PHISHING’ MALWARE THREATENS INDUSTRIES

A particular malware threat known as ‘TA2541’ continues as a persistent threat to many industries.

Email security company Proofpoint, has carried out research which has shown that attacks from the group often begin with unsophisticated phishing emails to staff members. The volume of emails can stretch into the hundreds of thousands and by urging immediate action recipients have been tricked into unwittingly downloading malware.

The campaign was first identified in 2017 where the malware gained remote access to a victim’s compromised machine(s) and stole data. This method still continues to use similar attack structure and patterns.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NSCSC) has published guidance for the public and organisations to help protect themselves from phishing attacks and malware which can be found at Mitigating malware and ransomware attacks - NCSC.GOV.UK
