RANSOMWARE ATTACKS SOAR IN 2021

SonicWall researchers have revealed a growing trend of ransomeware attacks on their customers, which rose by 105% to 623.3 million attempted recorded incidents in 2021.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and other cyber security authorities do not recommend organisations or individuals to pay ransom demands, as doing so perpetuates this criminal activity. If demanding payment to unlock compromised networks is unsuccessful, the criminals can revert to blackmailing their victims with the threat of releasing the stolen data.

Unfortunately, SonicWall’s report highlights the ‘phoenix rising’ situation where as soon as ransomware groups are taken down, others quickly replace them.

Steps that organisations and individuals can take to help protect themselves against ransomware, can be as simple as using unique passwords and implementing multi-factor authentication, which can provide additional deterrence to criminals. Making sure that your system is regularly updated, and your data is frequently backed-up will help minimise any disruption to your business should the worse happen.
